Question for blogging community

I am presently planning a couple of short stories collections with 5-6 stories each with around 8000-9000 words. Do you think it is an acceptable length for a short stories collection?

If not, what should be the minimum length?

  1. If you consider literature anthologies can run to twenty or more then you’re short. If you put it in perspective of single author then at least 10. I have a few indie collections around here with 15 or more. The bottom line is it’s up to you. If that’s all the content you have, that’s your answer. You run a risk either way. Too much for some, too little for others. I’d offer it as a sampler, that way no one knows if you have a treasure trove of other work or not. Also depends on the price. And frankly I’d ignore all the word count discussion. If it kicks ass with three short sentences, it doesn’t matter. If it’s all you the words you can read for a dollar ninety-nine and fifty cents worth is all you can stand…See what I mean? Word count is meaningless if the content quality is there. But, short and sweet? Call it a sampler. Good luck!

      1. Apologies for Anonymous. Phil Huston. I try not to advertise on other’s sites, put you can probably find me by clicking the Gravatar thing. Ignore the last few posts with author joking book covers…

      2. Also, several authors have put out what they are calling experimental or curated notebooks of micro fiction and short stories, leaving the impression of an artist’s sketchbook. However – if you consider your work edited and ready then the idea of sketchbook, which suggests an unfinished or unpolished idea, then I’d avoid that notebook/sketchpad connotation. But, once again, there’s the choice – if you get a lot of negative commentary you can always fall back on the “They were just ideas!” defense🤣

    1. Thanks John! :) I am currently finding it difficult to find a publisher since I am busy with my job and all these stories are bubbling out of me waiting to be read. So, I am just going to publish them myself! :)
